Art Deco tray with sepia landscape – ceramic in an openwork metal frame – ca. 1920–1935

Atmospheric and decorative Art Deco tray from the interwar period, featuring a large oval ceramic plate in an elegant openwork metal frame with two handles.

The decoration shows a tranquil rural scene in warm sepia and brown tones: a farm with a thatched roof, a monumental tree, hilly landscape, a fence, and clouds. The restrained color palette gives the whole piece exactly that understated, graphic look that suits applied arts from the 1920s and 1930s.

Similar European trays from this period were made with a painted or decorative ceramic plate, combined with an openwork metal gallery edge and metal handles. Examples from the 1920s–1930s are attributed to German production and come with landscape decors in sepia and gray tones.

The narrow metal edge is accented around with a beautiful vertically openwork pattern. On both sides are simple yet elegant wire-like handles. The overall appearance is light, refined, and very recognizable for the Art Deco period.

At the underside the ceramic bears the mark “85”. Based on this number alone I could not establish a reliable manufacturer. There are similar German and Central European examples known, but without an identifiable factory mark I purposefully do not attribute this tray to any specific maker.

Condition
In used condition with normal signs of age and wear. The metal frame shows patina, discoloration, scratches, and local oxidation appropriate to its age. On the underside of the ceramic plate there is a line visible that looks like a hairline crack. This is only observable on the underside and not visible on the top. The photos provide a clear impression and are an integral part of the description.

The top side of the ceramic presents itself particularly beautiful and the landscape decor is still bright and attractive.

A characterful interwar object that fits excellently in an Art Deco, vintage, or classic interior, both as a serving tray and as a decorative showpiece on a sideboard or table.
