Offered is a beautiful and characteristic Ikebana vase, also referred to as a block vase or chimney vase, designed by the renowned Dutch ceramic artist Pieter Groeneveldt (1889–1982).

The vase features a pronounced, geometric form with a nearly rectangular body, rounded corners and an elevated, narrow neck opening at the top. The four small rounded feet lift the object slightly from the surface, allowing the sculptural form to come into its own even more.

What is special is the dark brown to almost black glazed surface, on which a fine blue-green turquoise crystalline and speckled glaze is visible. The irregular distribution of the turquoise accents gives each side its own character.

An Ikebana vase is specifically designed for the traditional Japanese art of flower arranging (Ikebana). Unlike Western vases, where you often place a full bouquet of flowers, an Ikebana vase emphasizes minimalism, line, asymmetry, and empty space.

Pieter Groeneveldt (1889–1982) belongs to the well-known Dutch ceramicists of the twentieth century. His work is valued for the combination of strong, often geometric forms and distinctive, expressive glazes. Within his oeuvre both functional ceramics and more sculptural objects are present.

The vase is in very nice condition. At the bottom one of the feet has a chip which is presumably caused during the process. Furthermore this vase is not signed, which these vases never were.
