AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A large Renaissance Revival display dish (Prunkschüssel) decorated in high relief. It is modelled on the ornamental pewter and metal dishes made in Nuremberg and France in the late 16th century.

The cavetto is divided into compartments by terms and herms with masked cartouches. Each compartment shows a scene of putti: the grape harvest and wine-pressing, bacchic revels, music-making, and putti riding a centaur and other animals. The central boss holds a mythological scene in a medallion, framed by beaded, foliate and guilloche bands. The broad rim carries clusters of fruit and grapes in strong relief, with small raised bosses spaced around the edge.

The dark original patina has warm bronze highlights where the high points have worn with handling, which brings out the depth of the modelling. On the reverse is an applied central medallion.

A strong decorative piece for a wall, a cabinet or a library table.

Diameter: 38.5 cm
Height: 5.5 cm
Weight:

Condition: good antique condition with an even dark patina and natural wear to the high points. The reverse medallion’s edge is slightly lifted, with a small spot of verdigris. Some minor surface marks consistent with age.
