Description from the seller
Exceptional very large oval Cousances enamelled cast iron cocotte, made in France in the mid-1960s, in the famous Volcanic Orange color.
Thanks to its impressive dimensions, its oval shape, and its weight of 8 kg, it is a particularly rare and imposing piece from the old Cousances productions, a house renowned for the quality of its cast iron and integrated into the history of Le Creuset.
The exterior features a beautiful gradient of orange and red, while the interior is coated with a cream enamel that retains a very nice appearance.
The COUSANCES markings are present several times under the cocotte as well as under the lid, bearing witness to its origin.
Characteristics
Brand: Cousances / Le Creuset
Era: mid-1960s
Manufacture: France
Material: enamelled cast iron
Shape: oval
Color: Volcanic Orange
Interior: cream enamel
Length handle to handle: 44.5 cm
Width: 29 cm
Depth of the tub: 15 cm
Height with lid: 20 cm
Weight: about 9 kg
Condition
Very beautiful overall condition and remarkable for a piece over 60 years old.
The external enamel is very well preserved and shows magnificent orange and red nuances.
Inside, a few usage stains in the bottom of the tub are visible, without altering the overall appearance of the cocotte.
There are also a few small chips on the edge of the lid as well as on the edge of one of the handles. They remain relatively discreet and are clearly visible in the photographs.
The whole remains particularly appealing given its age, its dimensions, and its rarity.
A spectacular piece of Cousances heritage
With its 44.5 cm length and 8 kg, this cocotte is truly a centerpiece. Its large capacity makes it suitable for large tables and generous family preparations: braised meats, poultry, daubes, stews, vegetables, or dishes to share.
Enamelled cast iron allows excellent heat accumulation and return, ideal for long, steady cooking. The enamel protects the iron while offering a durable and easy-to-maintain surface.
Cousances is part of the prestigious history of French culinary cast iron and was incorporated into Le Creuset in the 20th century. Le Creuset, founded in 1925 in Fresnoy-le-Grand, celebrated its centenary in 2025.
More than a utensil, this imposing cocotte is an object of transmission. These old pieces were designed to last and can still accompany several generations, preserve family recipes, and become witnesses to exceptional meals, traditions, and culinary memories.
