Bala Krishna, child in ancient bronze - Ormolu, Patinated bronze - India - 19th century

Sculpture depicting Bala Krishna, the child form of the god Krishna, shown in a dynamic and playful pose. In his hand he holds a sphere of butter, an iconic element tied to the popular tradition telling of the mischievous child Krishna stealing butter prepared by his mother and the village women, a symbol of innocence, abundance and divine vitality. The figure rests on a base decorated with floral and stylized motifs.

The bronze has a dark patina with abrasions and signs of use consistent with age and traditional craftsmanship. The facial features, jewels and hairstyle reference the classical iconography of South India.
