A Pair of Refined Charles X Candle Stands – Fire-gilt bronze and cut lead crystal – France, ca. 1825–1830
Description
An exceptionally elegant and rare French pair of candelabras from the Charles X / Restoration period (ca. 1825–1830). This model is characterized by the striking contrast between rich fire-gilt bronze/brass (ormolu) and sleek, faceted clear crystal.
The tapering column shaft is carved from solid lead crystal with deep facet flutings. Between the richly worked capital and the candle holder sits an original, thick-walled cut crystal bobeche. The crystal work derives from the renowned tradition of early French manufactories such as Baccarat, Saint-Louis or Cristalleries du Creusot (Montcenis).
The bronze work is meticulously finished with classic bead moldings, fluting on the candle basket, and a finely carved floral frieze above the column. The base features the characteristic neoclassical ground plan with chamfered corners (pans coupés). The underside shows the solid sand casting with authentic concentric turning grooves and the original central tie rod. Fully original and never electrified.
