Censer - Brass - Louis XVI - incense burner

Late 19th-century thurible, circa 1880-1900 in Louis XVI style. The vessel is decorated with scrollwork and knurling friezes. The lid is crowned with foliage motifs and a pineapple. The thurible has a loose inner vessel for the glowing coal. For ecclesiastical use in the Catholic Church.

A thurible (in Latin Turibulum or Thuribulum) is a vessel in which incense is burned.

Usually it consists of a bowl with a lid. Three chains are attached to the bowl, by which the thurible can be carried during the service or hung on the stand. A fourth chain is attached to the lid. With this chain the lid can be pulled up to refill incense. This is done by placing incense grains on glowing coal.

The acolyte who carries the thurible is the thuriferarius, thuriferar or incense-bearer.
