Moroccan Berber/Amazigh Talismanic Qur’an Box – Engraved Mixed Metal
Unusual antique Moroccan talismanic box / Qur’an container, traditionally designed to be suspended from the body by a carrying cord.
The rectangular metal case is richly decorated on both sides with hand-worked geometric, scrolling and stylised foliate motifs, arranged around central medallions. Contrasting warm copper/brass-coloured details enrich the predominantly silver-toned metal surface and give the piece considerable decorative character.
The container opens by means of a hinged upper section, revealing the original interior compartment. Metal suspension loops are fitted to either side and retain a long golden-yellow braided textile cord with decorative tassels.
Objects of this type are associated with Moroccan and wider North African Berber/Amazigh traditions, where small metal containers could be worn to carry protective texts, amulets or miniature religious manuscripts. Comparable examples are generally dated to the late 19th or early 20th century.
