Russian Icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker – 19th century – Metal oklad – Documentation of 1995
DESCRIPTION
Ancient Russian icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (Saint Nikolaj Čudotvorec), dated, according to the documentation accompanying the work, to the second half of the 19th century.
The icon is executed on wooden panel, with levkas and tempera, and is covered by a substantial metal oklad worked in repoussé.
Saint Nicholas is depicted three-quarter view, with the right hand in the blessing gesture and the left hand holding the Gospel. On the sides of the head are medallions depicting Christ and the Mother of God.
The face and hands are left visible, while a large part of the icon's surface is covered by the oklad. The covering features relief decorations, crosses and ornamental motifs.
There is an inscription in Cyrillic characters:
"Nikolae Čudotvorec"
(Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker)
DOCUMENTATION
The work is accompanied by official documentation issued in the Czech Republic in 1995, relating to the certification of the object as a cultural property of value.
