Bartmann Jug (Baartman) & Drinking Beaker – Replicas after 16th-Century Originals.

Beautiful full-size reproduction of a rare 16th-century Bartmann jug (1,97kg), based on an original from Siegburg, Germany, dating to c. 1560–1580. Offered together with a matching drinking beaker (0,52kg) in the same Renaissance style.

According to the previous owner, these high-quality, full-size replicas were produced for a World's Fair Exhibition towards the end of the 19th century.

The jug features the characteristic bearded face on the neck, together with elaborate relief decoration and portrait medallions typical of Rhenish stoneware. The inscription “Gods Wart Blift In Ewickeit” translates approximately as “The Word of the Lord endures forever”, reflecting the religious inscriptions commonly found on 16th-century Bartmann jugs during the Reformation.

The drinking beaker is decorated with a mythological relief featuring Roman deities including Jupiter and Venus. The inscription “Bona Fide” is Latin for “in good faith” or “sincerely”. Such classical and allegorical imagery was characteristic of Renaissance stoneware from the Rhineland.

Siegburg was one of the most important centres of German stoneware production, alongside Cologne, Frechen and Raeren. Its fine, pale clay allowed potters to create exceptionally detailed relief decoration, and Siegburg stoneware was widely exported throughout Europe.

Condition: Both pieces are in excellent condition, with no damage, cracks, restorations or chips.
