Raku Vase

Because this is handcrafted work, there may be slight variations in size and color compared to the photos and among different pieces in the same series.

A vase shaped and turned by hand, with crackle blue glaze over a body of chamotte white clay at 5%.

The piece was created using the Raku process. A traditional Japanese ceramic firing technique dating back to the 16th century. This method is characterized by its spectacular and unpredictable aesthetics, with glazes and decorations that often take on unique and unrepeatable effects.

The piece was fired in a first firing in a neutral atmosphere for about nine hours at 880ºC and, after applying the glaze, it was fired a second time in a gas kiln at 980°C.

Once the object reaches the desired temperature and the glazes have fused, it is quickly removed from the kiln with tongs.

Once removed from the kiln, the object was immediately immersed in a combustible material (in this case sawdust).

This causes an accelerated oxidation reaction, which leads to cracks in the glaze.

The vases themselves are highly vitrified and waterproof; there is nothing toxic or dangerous that could leak out.

Remember, this is not factory-made mass-produced ceramic; every vase is individual. All pieces are entirely hand-built, turned, and glazed in my studio in Lecco, Italy
