Netherlands, West Friesland Scheepjesschelling 1750/48

Ship’s shilling West-Friesland struck in Holland Dordrecht. Zfr vz. Crowned provincial coat of arms of Holland between 6 - ., above it 1 7 5 0, surrounded by the text MO:NO:ORD:HOLL:ET:WESTFRI:kz. For windward sailing, the large flag on the stern is the Dutch flag, surrounded by the text VIGILATE DEO CONFIDENTES

The year 1750 has been changed from 1748. This year-change had not been previously noted and is unpublished. Extremely rare.

From 1700 these ship shillings were minted only for the VOC for use in Southeast Asia.

On the obverse the Republic is symbolized by a Dutch warship. The war fleet had also contributed to the independence of the Northern Netherlands. The ship is surrounded by the Latin text ′Vigilate Deo Confidentes′, translated as “Be vigilant, trusting in God.” This motto dates from the time of the Rebellion (16th century) and during the Republic was the armorial motto of the States of Holland. It is still the armorial motto of the province of South Holland.

Rare and valuable specimen
