Patinated bronze bust titled 'Lucrece' by Emmanuel Villanis (1858–1914), signed, with an estimated period of late 19th to early 20th century, in good condition, height 37 cm, width 24 cm, depth 14 cm, weight 4.963 kg, from France.
Description from the seller
Bust of an elegant, crowned lady, patinated bronze on a narrow pedestal. Bronze sculpture / bust signed E. Villanis with the title "Lucrece".
Very fine detailed work - the lady is of incredible beauty - this was perfectly realized by the artist. Every angle reveals new details.
On the back of the base is the old foundry mark of the Societe des Bronzes de Paris and the serial number 869.
This foundry operated roughly from 1875 to 1930 and was located at Boulevard du Temple 41 and Rue Béranger 14 in Paris. A workshop is also mentioned at Boulevard Voltaire 117.
The artist who created this statue was Emmanuel Villanis (1858-1914) – French sculptor.
His artistic style combines the features of Art Nouveau, such as floral attributes, flowing fabrics and flattering hair shapes, with the strict shaping of classical antiquity. The true charm of his best works, however, lies in the subtly present emotion in the face and bearing, as a touch of symbolism paired with concealed sensuality.
