Armchair - Wood

This rare vintage artisanal armchair is made of solid mahogany, in Art Deco style.
Designed by the famous Ghent architect: Paul Detaeye (1894-1973) who earned his diploma at the Academy in 1914.
He designed his own furniture. All in the Art Deco style.
And made by a cabinetmaker.
In solid wood.
The seat is very comfortable, a classic sprung seat, and it is padded.
The backrest has decorative buttons.
The fabric is velour in mouse-gray color and is nearly new.
It has been reupholstered and refinished by a very well-known Belgian company.
It sagged a bit with age, but now it sits perfectly.
The architect: Paul Detaeye used this armchair in his office to keep clients comfortably seated.
The architect designed many famous buildings in Ghent and was ahead of his time as early as 1914.
He wanted the large mansions he drew to already have very high ceilings.
But by the rules that wasn’t allowed yet.
So he conceived his own house, the house of my grandparents.
Where the ceilings in the corridors were all half-finished.
And in the living areas and bedrooms the ceilings were in trapezoid shapes.
Thus he still achieved his aims.
This was all to defy urban planning rules. He was very modern already.
This armchair also has special legs, nicely finished, also in Art Deco style, and you won’t find two identical.
This is a unique piece.
But! Only pickup.
I am a widow and a single woman; for medical reasons I am not allowed to drive and I know no one to help pack and ship this heavy armchair. My sincere apologies.
