This large African Baoulé mask, adorned with decorative motifs, depicts a ram. Polychrome lacquer finish.

The carved, twisted horns evoke aggression and destructive power. Long ears surround the animal’s head, emphasizing the relief of the snout. As a sacrificial victim for offerings and a metaphor of pugnacity, the ram mask is used during ceremonies linked to the male initiation society of the Poro.

Ce grand masque Baoulé africain, orné de motifs décoratifs, représente un mouton. Patine laquée polychrome.

Les cornes sculptées et torsadées évoquent l'agressivité et la puissance destructrice. De longues oreilles entourent la tête de l'animal, soulignant le relief du museau. Victime sacrificielle pour les offrandes et métaphore de la pugnacité, le masque de bélier est utilisé lors des cérémonies liées à la société initiatique masculine des Poro.
