Description from the seller
Rare Gothic “Ecce Homo” Head of Christ – Polychromed Linden Wood – Spain – Second Half 15th Century
A rare and expressive Gothic Ecce Homo head of Christ, carved in linden wood, originating from Spain and dating to the second half of the 15th century. Probably 1480-1500
This powerful devotional sculpture represents Christ after the flagellation, crowned with thorns. Traditionally referred to as “Ecce Homo” (“Behold the Man”).
The sculpture is remarkable for its deeply human and intimate expression, characteristic of the late Gothic period in Spain, when religious imagery increasingly emphasized the emotional and human suffering of Christ, making the sacred figure more accessible and relatable to the faithful.
The head shows a strong naturalistic treatment of the facial features:
elongated nose
gently closed, suffering eyes
expressive mouth
stylised beard and hair
Traces of the original polychromy remain visible across the face, together with remnants of the original textile crown of thorns, an element often used in late medieval devotional sculpture to create a more lifelike appearance.
The sculpture displays beautiful age and devotional wear, contributing to its powerful historic presence.
The emotional intensity and the transition from the more hieratic medieval style toward a more human and empathetic representation of Christ place this piece firmly within the late Gothic tradition of the Iberian Peninsula.
Material: Carved linden wood with remains of original polychromy and textile elements.
Origin: Spain
Date: Second half of the 15th century (circa 1480–1500)
