A sculpturally very successful and complex bronze group on a round base, depicting a ceremonial court scene of the Ashanti kingdom.
In the center sits the leader (Asantehene or village chief) under a large state parasol with a bird beak crown. In the Ashanti tradition, the parasol serves not only as sun protection but as a sacred symbol of divine protection and worldly power. Around him stand various courtiers, guards and musicians with traditional attributes.
Craftsmanship quality & casting technique:
Contrary to the more common, coarser castings, this piece demonstrates a high level of bronze casting craftsmanship. Made using the lost-wax method (cire perdue). Very characteristic is the elaborate wax-thread technique: the mantle of the ruler and the edges of the parasol are manually built from extremely fine wax spirals/threads, resulting in a delicate mesh texture in bronze. The round base is fitted with cast and chased geometric zigzag and herringbone motifs.
