Technics - SL-V5 Vertical Linear-Tracking Direct-Drive Automatic Turntable

The Technics SL-V5 is a rare, vertical linear turntable from 1983-1984. Technics designed this model as a space-saving and futuristic response to the then-emerging compact disc (CD).

Key features

Vertical design: The player sits upright, taking up only a fraction of the depth of a traditional turntable. The record is placed behind a glass door, which also serves as an integrated record clamp to keep the LP securely in place.

Linear arm (Tangential): The tonearm moves in a straight line from outer to inner over the record. This eliminates the tracking error (angle error) that normal, curved arms have. The arm is fully electronically driven and dynamically balanced.

Direct Drive: The SL-V5 uses Technics' renowned Direct Drive system with a brushless DC motor. This provides an exceptionally stable rotation speed and minimal wow and flutter (only 0.025% WRMS).

Fully automatic: You don’t have to place the needle on the record yourself. With buttons on the front panel you start, stop, and lift the arm automatically. The player detects whether a 12-inch LP or 7-inch single is on it.

T4P cartridge: The tonearm uses the T4P plug-in system (P-mount). This means you can easily swap cartridges and styli without manually adjusting tracking force or anti-skate.

The SL-V5 was produced in relatively small numbers at the time because the general public quickly shifted to CDs. Today it is a coveted design icon among vintage audio enthusiasts. While purists of ultimate audio quality often prefer the upright sibling (the iconic Technics SL-10), the SL-V5 offers a unique visual experience in which you can watch the record spin upright in front of you during playback.
