Ancient 19th-century Russian icon depicting Christ with saints and the Mother of God, measures 35.5 x 30.5 cm. Although the inscriptions in ancient ecclesiastical Slavonic on the side cartouches are partially worn by the aging of the pictorial layer, the features and garments of the six figures (three on the left and three on the right) allow identifying the categories typical of the Russian Menologion and Synaxaria:
Saint Bishops and Fathers of the Church: Recognizable by formal liturgical vestments, such as the omophorion (the long stole with crosses) and the Gospel book held firmly in their hands. They represent doctrinal guidance and the defense of the true faith.
Monks and Ascetics (Venerables - Prepodobnye): Figures dressed in the traditional dark monastic habit, often with the head covered by a hood (koukoulion) or a long beard, depicted in a pose of deep humility. They represent the model of pure prayer and detachment from the world.
Holy Women or Martyrs: Often placed in the lower panels or on the right side, characterized by light veils and colorful mantles, bearing witness to sacrifice and daily devotion.
These panels create a true communion of saints—the cosmic Church—where the heavenly Church assists and protects the earthly Church gathered in prayer before the icon.
