Icon of nine panels depicting biblical scenes, 19th-20th century, 30x26 cm, Russian tempera on a wooden board,datable to the 19th-20th century, depicting biblical and hagiographic scenes divided into panels or medallions arranged on three tiers. The work shows various signs of wear, color losses and conservation defects typical of the period.
Upper Register (Marian and Christological Scenes)
Panel Left: The Mother of God of the Sign (Znamenie). The Virgin is depicted frontally with her hands raised in prayer (orant); on her chest is impressed a medallion containing Christ Emmanuel blessing.
Panel Center: Resurrection / Descent into Hell. Jesus, in the center, shines forth and treads the broken doors of Hades, reaching out to Adam and Eve to draw them out of the tombs.
Panel Right: The Mother of God of Kazan. One of the most venerated Marian images in Russia, characterized by the Virgin's face inclined toward the Child Jesus, who is depicted standing, frontal, in the act of blessing with the right hand.
