Episcopal mitre embroidered with coat of arms – in its original case – Late 19th century to early 20th century – France or Italy
Rare ivory moire silk episcopal mitre, richly embroidered with multicolored floral motifs and outlined with cords bearing a geometric red, black and gold pattern.
The two lappets are adorned with ecclesiastical coats of arms sewn in, accompanied by the Latin motto « SUB TUUM PRAESIDIUM » visible in the photographs. The interior is lined with red silk.
The mitre is kept in its substantial original leather-bound case, with plush red interior textile and equipped with a brass handle.
« Sub tuum praesidium » is a Latin formula meaning: « Under your protection » or, more literally, « Under your safeguard ».
It is chiefly the beginning of a very ancient Marian prayer, Sub tuum praesidium confugimus, Sancta Dei Genitrix… : « Under your protection we take refuge, Holy Mother of God… ».
The precise identification of its owner remains to be established.
Heraldic research suggests a possible belonging to an apostolic protonotary or to a prelate of the Papal Household, attribution which nevertheless needs to be confirmed.
