Description from the seller
An impressive old-collection Hematite specimen from Elba Island, Italy, one of Europe’s classic mineral localities.
The specimen is composed of numerous intergrown tabular and platy Hematite crystals with a bright steel-grey to black metallic lustre. Many crystal faces are well defined and highly reflective, with attractive iridescent highlights visible in several areas. The dense crystallisation gives the specimen considerable depth and a strong three-dimensional appearance.
Scattered brassy metallic crystals are also present. The accompanying old collection label identifies the specimen as “HÆMATIT MED KOBBERKIS – ELBA” (“Hematite with Chalcopyrite – Elba”). The associated mineral is therefore described as probable Chalcopyrite, as it has not been analytically confirmed.
Mineral: Hematite with probable Chalcopyrite
Locality: Elba Island, Italy
Dimensions: approx. 8 × 7 × 6 cm
Weight: 523 g
Old collection label: Included
The specimen is in excellent overall collector condition. The crystal surfaces are well preserved, with natural contact areas and only minor edge wear. No visible repairs or restoration have been observed.
The old label is an important part of the specimen’s collection history and will accompany the mineral.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
