Pair of solid 915 silver salt and pepper shakers in the form of birds, made in Madrid, Spain, dating to 1930–1940, total weight 65 g (33 g and 32 g per piece), each 3.5 × 2 × 3 cm, in good used condition with minor signs of wear and patina.
Description from the seller
Original and charming pair of Spanish salt and pepper shakers in the shape of small birds, made of solid 915 sterling silver.
The figures are carefully crafted with a rich chased relief, reproducing the plumage with numerous details in the wings, chest, head and tail. The contrasts between the polished surfaces and the dark areas of the relief give depth and character to both pieces.
Each bird functions as a salt shaker or pepper shaker. At the base there is a small removable cap that allows filling the interior reservoir. The salt or pepper is dispensed later through the open beak of the bird, an especially original solution that combines decorative sculpture and functionality.
The pieces bear the Spanish five-pointed star hallmark, corresponding to 915 sterling silver, as well as the corresponding silversmith’s marks.
Made by Spanish silversmiths, Madrid, they are an attractive example of Spanish decorative silverware, characterized by the detailed, sculptural work of animal figures.
