Description from the seller

Fantastic Old Wine Jug (Claret Jug) Art Nouveau – WMF circa 1900.

Important wine jug with hinged (articulated) lid in Art Nouveau style (Jugendstil). Slender quadrangular-section body with lozenge-shaped base, resting on four curved geometric feet. Relevo (raised) decoration all around with botanical motifs of iris flowers and leaves (iris dekor), typical of the decorative grammar of the period. Curvilinear stylized handle and top terminate with a floral knob.

WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik), Geislingen, Germany. Circa 1900–1906.

WMF B: Indicates the maker (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) and the base metal used, which in this case is Britannia metal, a high-quality tin alloy ideal for the flowing reliefs of the Art Nouveau style.

as: Stands for Artificial Darkening. WMF chemically applied this oxidized patina to give the silver a darkened, patinated “old silver” look, enhancing the depth of the floral reliefs.

I/O: Represents the standard thickness of the silver plate applied over the base metal surface.

It is in fairly good structural condition, with no faults in that part; it was a much-beloved piece. One of the feet shows discoloration—note, it is not a restoration, it has simply lost its color, nothing more.

Seller's Story

Antiques are my great passion; all the items I have on auction were found at antique fairs and antique shops mainly from the Lisbon area, but also from the rest of Portugal, a country with a centuries-old history and many fabulous pieces and objects from this long journey, which I present here for auction. Only pieces of good quality, distinctly original, and obviously beautiful. Guarantee of quality and great care in the shipping of the items. Thank you.
