Description from the seller
Piazza del Duomo, Milan
Francesco Citterio – Rare panoramic view of Piazza del Duomo in Milan – Hand-colored aquatint on paper, Milan, c. 1840
Description
Extremely rare original print made in aquatint and hand-colored at the time, depicting a suggestive panoramic view of Piazza del Duomo in Milan.
The work was printed in Milan around 1840 by Francesco Citterio, at the publisher Tommaso Genevresi, as can be inferred from the technical and stylistic characteristics of the engraving.
Citterio demonstrates notable pictorial skill, particularly in the rendering of architectural and atmospheric luminosity of the square, achieved through delicate tonal transitions that create an effective contrast with the blue of the sky. The contemporaneous coloration, executed in tempera by a skilled hand, further enriches the scene with elegance and chromatic harmony.
Along the lower margin is the title of the work, stamped in red.
