2. Optical and photographic characteristics
The 10–20 mm range covers on APS-C both the pronounced ultra-wide angle and the classic wide angle. Especially at 10 mm, strong spatial impact and emphasized perspective are produced. Typical use fields are landscape, architecture, interiors, travel, city and real estate photography. The constant maximum aperture of F3.5 is a key quality and comfort feature. The maximum aperture is retained during zooming. This eases exposure control and manual operation and was a selling point compared to variable-light constructions.
Sigma used special glasses and aspherical elements in this model to correct chromatic and spherical aberrations, as well as multi-coating to reduce flare and ghosting. At extreme wide angles, construction-related distortion, edge vignetting and weaker corner performance than the center can be possible topics, especially with wide-open aperture at 10 mm.
3. HSM autofocus and operation
HSM stands for Hyper Sonic Motor. The ultrasonic drive enables fast and comparatively quiet focusing. The lens has an AF/MF switch and a distance scale. Zoom and focus rings are large and rubber-coated for practical DSLR use.
4. Model history
The 10–20 mm F3.5 EX DC HSM belonged to Sigma's EX program, which, before the introduction of today’s Global Vision lines (Art, Contemporary, and Sports), defined the manufacturer’s premium product class. The combination of extremely wide APS-C coverage, ultrasound autofocus, and constant maximum aperture F3.5 positioned this model above many contemporary kit and standard wide-angle zooms.
An important distinction is made from the also-common Sigma 10–20 mm F4–5.6 EX DC HSM. The present lens is the brighter F3.5 version and features an 82-mm filter thread.
Overall assessment: technically interesting and still well usable as an ultra-wide lens from the DSLR era, with above-average constant brightness F3.5.
From private possession.
