Description
Special and decorative handmade African Mancala game, crafted in dark, warm-toned wood.
The game consists of a nicely worked, foldable wooden playing box with two rows of pits on the inside. The pits are filled with the accompanying teardrop seeds, which are used as the playing stones. The exterior is richly hand-decorated with, among other things, a stylized African face, graphic motifs and relief details.
The wooden construction features metal hinges and clasps. Because of its foldable design the game is practical to store and at the same time an attractive decorative object when presented opened or closed.
Mancala is the umbrella term for a large group of traditional board games played in various parts of Africa. Moving and distributing seeds or stones over the pits forms the basis of these games. This specimen is suitable both as a game and for decorative presentation.
Condition
The game is in good vintage condition, appropriate to its age and handmade character. The wood shows minor signs of use and aging and the metal hinges have some discoloration/patina. These features contribute to the object's authentic appearance.
