Kneehole desk - Hardwood

Important solid wood double pedestal desk, traditionally built, characterized by generous proportions, nine drawers, and a wide work surface with a central insert.

The desk repeats the classic configuration of pedestal desks spread between the late 19th and early 20th centuries: two side cabinet units with drawers support the wide surface, leaving a comfortable space in the center for seating.

The front features eight side drawers, four per side, and a large central drawer, for a total of nine. The drawers are made of wood and feature traditional dovetail joints, clearly visible in the photographs.

Particularly characteristic are the shell handles in brass-colored metal, which contribute to the desk’s classical and professional character. The large central drawer is fitted with two handles.

The top presents a wide central writing surface in dark brown, inset within a substantial solid wood frame. The surface shows normal signs of use, consistent with the function and age of the piece.

An interesting element is the treatment of the sides and the back: both are fully veneered and divided into wood panels, rather than left raw. The desk thus presents a complete appearance also at the rear and can be placed not only against a wall but also in the center of a study or room.

The wood has a warm honey-brown tone and a very evident grain, particularly appreciated on the large side panels, on the back and on the frame of the top. The construction is robust and substantial, as one would expect from a traditional study piece of this type.

In terms of constructional and stylistic features, the desk belongs to the European pedestal desk tradition of the first half of the 20th century, with an evident nod to earlier English models. In the absence of marks or original documentation, no specific maker is indicated.

The desk was purchased from an antiquarian in my city and, at the time of purchase, had already undergone conservative restoration.

Since then it has been carefully preserved and regularly cleaned and polished using products specific to the care of antique wood. The piece retains a pleasant patina and shows normal signs, small abrasions, and irregularities due to age and use, visible in the photographs.

The proportions are particularly balanced: with a width of 136.5 cm, a depth of 75 cm, and a height of 77.5 cm, the desk offers a wide and deep work surface while remaining suitable for a home study. The fully finished and paneled back also allows it to be placed in the center of a room without needing to lean against a wall.

Overall it is in excellent condition, fully functioning as a desk and maintaining the character of a piece of furniture.
