Large hand-engraved brass Mamluk Revival tray with Thuluth calligraphy – Ø 50 cm – Middle East, approx. 1940.
A beautiful and highly finely detailed handmade Eastern tray (wall plaque) of solid brass, executed in the classical Mamluk revival style. This type of high-quality metalwork was produced in the early to mid-20th century by master craftsmen in the historical art centers of Cairo or Damascus.
Decorative details and symbolism:
The tray is fully bezelled (hand-engraved). The central motif features a monumental eight-pointed star, built from endless geometric interlacing bands. Around it sits a ring with cartouches in which extremely refined Arabic calligraphy in the monumental Thuluth script is inscribed, alternating with floral medallions and arabesques. The deeper parts are darkened to make the relief and the letters stand out beautifully.
Material: Yellow copper (Solid Brass)
Region/Origin: Middle East, probably Egypt.
