Description from the seller

A special and authentic piece of European coffee history. This antique manual coffee roaster probably dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, from a period when coffee at home was still fully roasted by hand.
Before electric coffee roasters and modern household appliances became commonplace, green coffee beans were roasted in a metal roaster like this over a heat source. The hand crank continuously moved the internal stirring mechanism, so the beans were constantly turned during roasting and did not burn. The semicircular flap allowed you to put the beans into the roaster and remove them again after roasting.
Thus this object is effectively an early precursor of the modern coffee roaster and a tangible piece of history of our daily cup of coffee.
The coffee roaster is made of dark patinated sheet iron, combined with wooden handles. The original crank, fill cap and internal stirring mechanism are present. The outer wall features a nicely pressed relief and a natural patina developed through use and age. Oxidation, wear and signs of use emphasize the authentic character.
An atmospheric collectible for lovers of antiques, brocante, historical kitchenware and coffee memorabilia. Also very decorative in a countryside, classical, industrial or eclectic kitchen, coffee corner or hospitality venue.
