Large footed bowl with lid in solid thuja burl – turned craftsmanship – 1970s design
Fascinating large decorative bowl with lid and raised base, made from solid thuja burl, dating from the 1970s.
A piece with a strong decorative presence, characterized by an elegant, almost architectural silhouette: the wide, softly rounded, bulbous bowl is supported by a turned, circular-base foot, while the lid, structured into multiple concentric levels, ends with a refined pointed turned knob.
The real protagonist is naturally the wood. The thuja burl exhibits particularly rich figuring, with deep grain, eyes, knots, and color variations ranging from burnt honey to deep brown. The polish beautifully emphasizes this natural texture, which differs at every point of the object.
Also especially evocative is the characteristic and intense aromatic scent of thuja, still perceptible when the lid is opened: a sensory detail that makes the piece even more pleasing and distinctive.
The interior is also fully finished and polished, revealing the splendid natural figuring of the burl.
The piece has been inspected, stabilized, and polished and is now solid and perfectly usable and displayable. There are natural cracks from the burl’s drying, some stabilized, and traces of old gluing/interventions, clearly documented in the photographs. These are characteristic of the wood’s nature and the object’s history, which preserves a beautiful patina and authentically vintage charm. There was no attempt to artificially erase its history through invasive restoration.
