- a crowned letter M;

The objects have been compared by the owner with examples from a reference work on medieval lead-tin objects. Some similar types are dated there to between circa 1300 and 1425.
Material: presumably lead-tin, brass
Condition: ground finds with oxidation, wear, deformation and missing attachment pins. See the photos for the condition and finish. The illustrated pages from the reference work are for comparison only and are not included.
These insignia or emblems made of tin, brass or precious metal were carried on pilgrimage for protection or to show which journey had been undertaken; they were worn on the pilgrim’s clothing, hat, staff or garments. Many were thrown into water upon return as offerings. They were also cast into bells or sewn into books.
