Original black paper-covered boards with illustrated dust jacket, folding die-cut chemise and printed cardboard slipcase. Book design by Kohei Sugiura. Package design by Toshiro Ishio. With the separately printed text “MAP” by Kenzaburo Oe in Japanese and English. Approx. 230 × 150 mm.
Published on August 6, 1965, exactly twenty years after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Chizu (The Map) is one of the most important and influential Japanese photobooks of the postwar period.
Kawada’s photographs bring together the physical traces of the Second World War and the transformation of postwar Japan: stains and peeling surfaces inside the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome, military relics and portraits, the Japanese flag and imperial symbols, alongside discarded Coca-Cola bottles and Lucky Strike packaging associated with the American occupation. Moving between abstraction and documentary detail, these images construct a fragmented visual map of memory, destruction and postwar identity.
The radical book design by Kohei Sugiura is inseparable from the photographic work. Its elaborate gatefold structure allows images to be opened, concealed and recombined, transforming the act of reading into a process of uncovering successive layers of history. Sugiura himself later discussed Chizu as an experiment in allowing the photographic sequence to be rearranged through its folded-page construction.
The original edition was produced in only 700 copies and has become one of the major landmarks of twentieth-century photobook collecting.

CONDITION
The original cardboard slipcase shows some sunning to the spine, with some staining and a previous owner's name on the rear. The dust jacket has a few minor scratches and some light foxing to the inner flap, with a small crease to the corner of the same flap. The book itself is in very good condition. Complete with the original dust jacket, die-cut folding chemise, cardboard slipcase, and the separately printed text by Kenzaburo Oe.
