Teapot - Earthenware

Chinese hand-painted earthenware pouring jug or lid pot, dating from the 19th century. Such rural, rustic pots were used in China for storing or pouring liquids.

Characteristic features of this specific design are: Lugs on the shoulders: These small rings on either side of the neck are intended to thread a carrying cord through. This made the pot easy to carry or hang.

Hand-painted calligraphy: The body and the lid are decorated with flowing, dark gray to bluish characters and abstract patterns (such as the raised arches on the shoulder) under a lightly crackled glaze.
