The Luxman D-107U CD player is a high-end CD player from the golden age of Japanese hi-fi (1990-1992), perfectly embodying Luxman's build quality and sonic signature. This vintage CD player combines cutting-edge digital technology with the incomparable warmth of tubes, thanks to its two 6CG7 tubes. The result is a musicality typical of the best tube-equipped systems. The digital-to-analog conversion uses two N/A AD1860 1860-bit converters with 8x oversampling, guaranteeing audiophile sound reproduction with exceptional precision and dynamics. The KSS-152A mechanism ensures precise and reliable reading, while its robust 12 kg construction testifies to the care given to vibration damping and mechanical stability. Ideal for audiophiles seeking a vintage tube CD player, it is capable of reproducing all the emotion of music with Luxman’s characteristic sound.
The mechanism is of very good quality: metal-injected except for the tray. It is a Sony with a KSS-152A block, placed centrally and very securely fixed.
The rear panel is a cover plate; it is on this that the two impedance adaptor transformers for the tubes are fixed.
The power supplies are all very carefully designed, with an EMI filter on the mains, and regulators either integrated or in discrete components after rectification of the secondary voltages. The transformer is continuously powered, and the startup is via a four-contact switch. This very particular arrangement is linked to a muting system at startup (about 30 seconds). For this system to be active from startup, it is, however, continuously energized, so there is a tapping upstream of the OFF/ON switch on a secondary winding of the transformer (all this is not visible on the diagram). Muting is necessary due to the rise time of the tubes.
The handling of the optical disk reading is done by two Sony circuits: CXA1081 and 1082. Frame processing by a CXD1125 (Sony), digital filtering by an SM5813 (NPC), so only very classic and very solid components.
A/N conversion is performed by two AD1860s from Analog Devices; 18-bit PCM with very low noise and distortion. Here too, this is a (very) good converter.
What then makes this device distinctive is found: an analog voltage amplification stage using tubes (6CG7) from General Electric. Each tube is used in half (as these are double triodes), one tube per channel, in class A. The drive is made via coupling capacitors from the outputs of the CANs.
The output signal is either available directly on two RCA sockets on the rear labeled: "Fixed", or can be modulated by a dual analog potentiometer (motor-driven) and available on two other RCA sockets labeled: "VARIABLE" (via a dual operational amplifier: NJM4580). Finally, the headphone output can also be used, amplified via a M5216. Well... purists will prefer the FIXED outputs, others will enjoy the convenience of volume control via remote.
