Original Salampasu short sword from the Kasaï region in the Republic of Congo. The piece is estimated to date from the late 19th century.
The sword has an overall length of about 52 cm, with the blade measuring 43 cm. The blade itself has the typical broad leaf shape with a pronounced central ridge. Its age and the honest craftsmanship of the smith are clearly evident – the characteristic hammer marks and a handsome, dark patina of aging.
The real highlight, however, is the accompanying wooden scabbard. It is almost completely wrapped with densely packed, jagged metal bands; the more bands there are, the richer it looks.
On the front and back there is a raised central spine, densely inlaid with old upholstery nails. On the back there is also the original hole for the carrying strap. Anyone familiar with Tribal Art knows how rare it is to find scabbards in such good and undamaged condition – the bindings are rock-solid. The wooden grip in an hourglass design is also adorned with metal bands and decorative nails.
