Antique walnut fronton, a large architectural carved ornament dating from the late 19th century (ca. 1860–1890), likely a crown piece for a cabinet, featuring a central stylised pineapple and acanthus foliage with layered depth, in good antique condition with signs of wear and minor stains; dimensions approximately 55 cm wide, 50 cm high, 112 cm deep.
Description from the seller
Grand 19th-century furniture pediment / architectural ornament – carved walnut wood – pineapple and floral motifs – Western Europe
Large and particularly decorative hand-carved wooden furniture pediment from the 19th century, executed in rich relief.
Centrally there is a large stylized pineapple, surrounded by a symmetric composition of boldly carved acanthus leaves, flowers, fruits, and geometrically worked ornaments. The carving consists of several depth levels, giving the piece a pronounced three-dimensional and architectural effect.
The form and execution indicate that this was originally not a stand-alone wall ornament, but probably the crown piece / pediment of a larger cabinet, sideboard, mirror, or interior panelling. Comparable carved pediments occur on European walnut furniture from the latter half of the 19th century, especially within the Neo-Renaissance and other historicizing furniture styles.
Examples from France and England circa 1870–1880 show the same combination of walnut, floral high-reliefs, and richly worked furniture crowns.
The wood has a beautiful old dark brown patina. On the higher parts, natural wear and color variations are visible, while in the deep parts the dark finish has remained preserved.
These signs of age emphasize the depth of the carving.
Material: presumably solid walnut wood / walnut
Origin: probably Western Europe, possibly France, Belgium or the Netherlands
Period: second half of the 19th century
Dating: estimated ca. 1860–1890
Style: historicizing / neo-Renaissance, with floral and classical ornamentation
Function: presumably cabinet pediment, crown piece or architectural furniture ornament
Condition: good antique condition with appropriate signs of use and age; see photos for details
Dimensions: exact measurements to be added
