Sculpture, Hl. Petrus - 84 cm - Oak - 1800

The Holy figure has been in my family’s possession for over 150 years. It can be placed upright (there is a corresponding opening at the bottom) and hung. It used to hold a key in its hand.

It is believed to be Saint Peter, as it bears the typical face with wavy, often curly hair and the curly full beard, which is considered the classic portrayal. Normally he holds the keys to heaven in his hand, which, unfortunately, have been lost.

The back is flatter in its construction. It has always hung in a wall niche with us. It could originally have adorned an altar retable or a pulpit decoration, as it is not meant to be freestanding. The wood shows natural shrinkage cracks, insect holes, and age-related wear. Otherwise, it is in top condition. In the photos, upon closer inspection, there is damage visible on the left hand, but I have known about it for 60 years.

I am not sure whether it is oak, swamp oak, or linden wood.
