David Lurie (South African, b. 1951) is a documentary photographer whose work examines the social, political, and spatial realities of South Africa. Born in Cape Town, Lurie studied economics, politics, and philosophy before teaching philosophy, conducting research in international political economy at the London School of Economics, and working as a consultant economist. He began undertaking documentary photography projects in London in 1990 and became a full-time photographer in 1995, following the publication of his first book, Life in the Liberated Zone.

Lurie’s work moves between portraiture, street photography, and landscape, with a sustained interest in urban margins, inequality, memory, and the legacies of apartheid. His books include Images of Table Mountain (2006), Undercity – the Other Cape Town (2017), Daylight Ghosts: History, Myth, Memory (2018), Karoo – Land of Thirst (2019), and Dreaming the Street (2022). He is the recipient of several awards including Pictures of the Year International, the World Understanding Award for Cape Town Fringe: Manenberg Avenue is where it’s Happening; Nikon (UK); Ilford Pro Photo (SA); and Arts Council of Great Britain Grant Awards. His photographs are represented in public collections including the Iziko South African National Gallery, Berkeley Art Museum, and Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. Lurie lives and works in Cape Town.
