Vairocana is the cosmic primordial Buddha in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism who represents universal wisdom and the middle of the cosmos.
Vairocana Buddha is regarded as the central figure of the five dhyani Buddhas.
He symbolizes the ultimate reality (the dharmakaya) and is the source from which all other Buddhas arise.
His name literally means "Light-guide" or "Great Sun" (Mahāvairocana); he stands for universal enlightenment that pervades everything.
In the mandala of the five wisdom Buddhas, he occupies the center and represents the element space.
In the Tōdai-ji temple in Japan there stands a huge bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha of about 15 meters in height.
Longmen Caves (China): The most famous and largest rock statue in the Fengxian Temple is also a representation of Vairocana.
