Ciborium in solid silver and vermeil – Martial Dejean – First Empire, circa 1798-1809 - Paris
Resting on a wide circular foot with a stepped base, this ciborium features an elegant engraved and chased decoration of palmettes, foliage, garlands and vegetal motifs, characteristic of the neoclassical decorative vocabulary of the period. The ovoid knop is also adorned with relief foliage.
The wide hemispherical cup, sober and balanced, preserves inside a beautiful mercurial gilding (vermeil) intended to protect the silver in contact with the Holy Host.
It is surmounted by a bombé lid richly engraved with a crown of flowers and foliage, topped by a small cross.
The piece bears several antique hallmarks:
- The rooster hallmark corresponding to the 1st title of French silver from 1798-1809
- The guarantee mark with a woman's head
- The master’s mark, read as M, star, D, identified as Martial Dejean
A liturgical goldsmithing piece of notable presence, interesting both for the quality of its decoration and for its substantial weight and its precise dating at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century.
