A hollow Thai terracotta Buddha head with spiral curls, 27 cm high, 19 cm wide and 20 cm deep, brown patina, dating to the 20th century and attributed to Thailand, unsigned and in good condition.
Description from the seller
Brown patinated Buddha head with spiral curls • Thailand (attrib.) • 20th century
Hollow Buddha head made of baked terracotta with rows of rolled curls, drooping eyes and a soft smile.
A Buddha head of baked clay in Thai tradition, 27 cm high. Rows of spiral curls rise up to a conical ushnisha with a pointed crown. The drooping eyes and full lips give the face a sense of calm. In the curl hollows, the red of the glaze shows through beneath the dark finish.
For this object there is also a Buy Now price set, for those who wish to acquire it immediately without waiting.
In one glance:
Material: terracotta, unglazed, hollow
Dimensions: h 27 x w 19 x d 20 cm
Weight: 2,500 g
Brand: no factory mark, signature or label; two short incised strokes on the neck
Dating: 20th century, presumably first half
Provenance: purchased from a specialized Asian arts dealer, Belgium
Description and context:
The head is hollow and open at the bottom, with a rounded neck edge without a rupture plane. It is therefore a complete head. The curls were laid one by one and rolled; they vary in size and depth, indicating hand craftsmanship. The glaze is reddish-orange and sandy, about 1.5 to 2 cm thick at the neck edge. Similar Thai terracotta heads and busts, hand-formed and 20th century, offered by dealers as Dvaravati style, after Thai sculpture from the 6th to 11th centuries. A 29 cm example sold by Taliesin Antiques.
Condition:
Good. Neck edge: a fine hairline crack and a small flake at the edge; see the photos. Surface: small pits and light wear, typical of baked clay. No restorations observed beyond this.
In short, an honest vintage condition for its age.
In the interior:
Fits into a Boho, eclectic or Zen interior, on a shelf, sideboard or low table. The curls give the head a relief and shadowing, visible from every angle.
Shipping:
Professionally packed in a sturdy box with cushioning material, for fragile objects a double box. Always insured with Track and Trace. See feedback from previous buyers.
Attribution and sources:
No maker or workshop is identified or claimed. The country is inferred from visual comparison with a similar Thai piece and from market context, not from a brand. Java and Cambodia are not excluded. The dating is indicative, assessed by handling the piece. Sources: Taliesin Antiques and the Thai heads in the Rijksmuseum.
