Openwork bottle coaster in brass with silver plating, in Art Nouveau/Jugendstil style, manufactured by Metallwarenfabrik H.A. Jürst & Co. around 1900–1920, model with cherries on tall stems and serrated leaves, dimensions 8 cm high, 11 cm wide and deep, weight 138 g.
Description from the seller
circa 1900–1920
Jürst openwork bottle coaster with cherries on long stems and serrated leaves, at the bottom a pressed band of chequered ribbon weave and rosettes. circa 1900–1920
Jürst bottle coaster in open-worked brass, Art Nouveau, made around 1900–1925. Cherries on long stems and serrated leaves stand in relief on the wall, with the bottle visible behind. The brand is stamped on the inner bottom: an oval with a bird and the name JÜRST.
At a glance:
Material: brass, thin punched and open-worked plate; top layer largely worn away
Dimensions: height 8 x diameter 11 cm; inner opening 97 mm
Weight: 138 g
Brand: JÜRST, stamped in a shaded oval with a bird, centered on the inner bottom
Dating: circa 1900–1925
Origin: from an Art Nouveau collection, private collection, Western Europe
Description and context:
Cylindrical wall piece on a spreading foot. Cherries and leaves are open-worked; at the bottom runs a pressed band of diamond-shaped ribbon weave with rosettes. The thin plate suits a weight of 138 g. The inner bottom is a twisted disk with remnants of the silvery top layer. The naturalistic fruit and leaf decoration fits Jugendstil around 1900. Jürst (Berliner Metallwarenfabrik H.A. Jürst & Co.) was founded in 1847 at Friedrichstraße 64. As a court supplier, the company produced gold-, silver-, and silver-plated wares; in 1925 it merged into Frankonia. On Catawiki, a Jürst bottle coaster with cherries and leaves of almost the same size has been offered previously.
Condition:
Good. Top layer: largely worn away to yellow brass, traces on the inner bottom. Patina: dark oxidation in the recesses of the decoration. Rim: on one side slightly irregular. Inner bottom: fine scratches and stains in the top layer. Wall and bottom: no cracks or holes observed. See the pictures.
In the interior:
Fits in an Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, or eclectic interior, on a sideboard next to a bottle. The open-worked decoration showcases the bottle and the leaf relief catches the light.
Shipping:
Professionally packed in a sturdy box with cushioning material, for fragile objects a double box. Always insured with Track and Trace. See feedback from previous buyers.
Attribution and sources:
Marked JÜRST. The stamp shape corresponds to the reference stamp of the Berliner Metallwarenfabrik H.A. Jürst & Co. on silvercollection.it; oldcopper.org describes the same brand and steinmarks.co.uk confirms the company. No catalog or photo of this specific model has been found. Other German makers of open-worked bottle coasters, such as WMF, Orivit, and Kayserzinn, fall short of this mark.
