Description from the seller
Jean Jaffeux, Email on Volvic lava stone, Brutalism, Amphora and Sun, 1970s, Auvergne, France
Description:
Authentic decorative plaque enamelled on Volvic lava stone, created by the master enameler from Auvergne, Jean Jaffeux (1931-2015) in his workshop in Riom (Puy-de-Dôme).
• Dimensions: 30 cm (height) x 21 cm (width) x 0.8 cm (thickness)
• Weight: 1.10 kg
• Signature and traceability: Signed by the artist in relief on the raw stone at the back, and bearing the original gold workshop label (“Émaux sur Lave, J. JAFFEUX, 63200 RIOM”). Equipped with an original metal hanging ring.
Aesthetic and technical analysis:
This work wonderfully illustrates the unique know-how of the Auvergne glassmaking and ceramics tradition of the 20th century. The panel features a brutalist composition with strong graphical and symbolic impact: a stylized amphora in brown and blue tones from which bursts of flames and azure breaths emerge, topped by a radiant sun in ochre and beige hues.
The high-temperature enamel work provides a striking contrast:
The gloss and depth of the enamels (deep blues, shimmering ochres, and raised touches of white) catching the light.
The raw Volvic lava stone, porous and volcanic, intentionally left visible on the fields and on the back of the plaque, recalling the geological and mineral grounding of the piece.
Historical context:
Trained at the Atelier de Saint-Martin in Mozac before establishing himself independently in Riom, Jean Jaffeux became a key figure in lava enamel work. Known for his unique pieces and collaborations in regional sacred art, his work is today highly sought after by collectors of modernist design, mineral aesthetic, and exceptional art crafts.
State of conservation:
Excellent overall condition. The surface enamel is perfectly stable, shiny, and without cracks. The raw lava stone on the back retains its original authentic appearance.
