Remarkable patinated bronze sculpture representing Themis (Greek mythology) or Justitia (Roman mythology), the allegorical goddess of Justice, one of the most emblematic figures of classical and contemporary statuary, present in courthouses around the world.
The figure is rendered with great finesse and exemplary attention to detail. The eyes are blindfolded — a symbol of the impartiality of justice — the face delicate and serene, the goddess holds in one raised hand a metal balance with its finely worked chains, and in the other a sword pointed downward, symbol of the power to cut and to punish. She tramples underfoot a serpent coiled at her base, symbol of evil and injustice vanquished. Her draped garment, adorned with engraved motifs on the bodice, is treated with a supple and elegant modeling. The base bears a founder’s signature.
The balance is a metal element attached, with its chains, adding a beautiful detail of realism and refinement to the whole.
The sculpture rests on a molded bronze plinth placed on a veined black marble base.
