French Napoleon III era portico clock, circa 1850–1855, in ebonised wood with gilt bronze twisted columns, white enamel dial with Roman numerals, mechanical eight‑day movement and half‑hour strike on a bell, complete with winding key and pendulum; 50 × 24.5 × 14.5 cm, about 2.75 kg, in working order but used with probable small missing parts.
Description from the seller
Elegant and important portico clock (also known as a temple clock) from the Napoleon III era, made in France around 1850-1855. The case is entirely in ebonized wood, characterized by imposing barley-twist columns with gilt bronze capitals and bases. The case is richly adorned on the front and the top with geometric-floral polychrome inlays and delicate mother-of-pearl inserts. The dial is white enamel with hours indicated in Roman numerals and peripheral minute track. Technical Details and Punches: The rear brass movement with anchor escapement presents excellent historical-collectible value thanks to the original stamps impressed on the plate: Circular factory mark "Japy Frères": bears the inscription related to the Grand Médaille d’Honneur and the dates of the 1844 and 1849 industrial exhibitions, which certify its authenticity and dating to the early 1850s. Serial number: 216 (a very low initial production for this series). Technical punch: "6" at the bottom, indicating the original pendulum length in French lines. Exact Measurements (certificate with a meter): Height: 50 cm (to the maximum point of the pediment) Base width: 24.5 cm Base depth: 14.5 cm Condition and Operation: Case: The wood is structurally solid, stable and in excellent overall aesthetic condition, with slight and normal signs of aging consistent with the period. Dial: The enamel is intact but shows some subtle superficial hairlines of time (visible in photos), typical of these pieces. Mechanism: The clock is functioning but needs to be serviced as it stops after a short time. Sold with its original winding key and pendulum. Since it has remained still for a long time, a normal lubrication and routine check by a watchmaker is recommended to ensure maximum long-term accuracy. Shipping and Packaging: The lot will be packed professionally and ultra-protectively (the pendulum and key will be disassembled and protected separately inside the package to prevent damage during transport). The shipment will be fully trackable and insured.
