Description from the seller
Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
A collection of four ancient Roman sling projectiles, formed from fired clay. Each sling bullet has a compact ovoid or almond-shaped body with rounded sides and subtly tapered ends. Variations in colour, texture and firing range from warm reddish brown to grey and dark charcoal tones.
-> In addition to stone and cast-lead ammunition, Roman slingers also used projectiles made from fired clay. These could be produced cheaply and in considerable numbers, making them a practical form of ammunition during military campaigns and sieges and very effective for harassing enemy formations and supporting infantry during sieges and open battle.
Length: ± 37.4 - 37.7 - 37.8 - 51.2 mm
Condition
Good solid condition. The stones retain their characteristic ovoid forms, with varied surface wear, signs of impact and areas of earthy encrustation. Minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> Ceramic sling projectiles were generally shaped by hand before firing. Their pointed or tapered profiles improved their aerodynamic form, while differences in clay composition and firing conditions account for the varied colours seen within this group. Similar fired-clay projectiles have been recovered from ancient settlements, military encampments and siege sites.
