Description from the seller
Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
A European bronze Corpus Christi, dating to the 17th century. Christ is depicted with elongated proportions, with his arms raised in a pronounced V-shape and his head inclined to one side. A folded loincloth (perizonium) is draped around the hips, while the legs extend downwards with the feet placed together. The hands and feet retain their original perforations for attachment to a cross, which is no longer present.
-> The Latin term *Corpus Christi*, meaning “Body of Christ”, is used in art to describe the sculpted figure of Christ intended for attachment to a crucifix. During the Baroque period, such figures became increasingly expressive, emphasising Christ’s physical suffering and sacrifice through dramatic posture, elongated limbs and carefully modelled drapery.
Size: ± 131 mm
Condition
Good solid condition. Dark brown patina with areas of green oxidation and surface deposits. The three attachment holes through the palms and feet are original features. The accompanying cross is no longer present. Minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> Bronze Corpus Christi figures were commonly mounted on wooden crosses for use in churches, chapels or private domestic devotion. The separate casting of the figure allowed it to be secured to crosses of different sizes by means of small nails or rivets passing through the hands and feet.
