Description from the seller
Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
A cast lead roofing tack cover, known in Dutch as a *trotseerlood*. The shield-shaped front is decorated in relief with a large Tudor Rose, enclosed with in a double concentric circle. The upper and lower corners of the shield are adorned with fleurs-de-lis (French lilies), adding a heraldic element to the piece.
-> The lead roofing was first secured with a nail. The *trotseerlood* was then positioned over the nail and its hole and soldered to the surrounding leadwork along its upper edge. This protected the fastening against rainwater and corrosion while also helping to prevent the roofing sheets from lifting in strong winds.
Size: ± 92.8 x 67.1 mm
Condition
Good condition. The central Tudor rose and surrounding border remain clearly recognisable. Irregular remnants of the original soldered attachment survive along the upper edge. Dark grey patina with areas of earthy deposits. Minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> These small lead plaques were used by master plumbers and slaters to cover up and waterproof exposed nail heads on lead or zinc roofing. Beyond their technical utility, they served as a hallmark or "business card" for the craftsman. They are unique to Northern Dutch historical architecture and are frequently found on prominent buildings like prestigious buildings with lead-covered roofs, including churches, castles and substantial residences.
