Elegant and particularly interesting testimony of postwar Italian industrial design, Termica Express, known to collectors also as “La Signora,” is a coffee maker designed and produced by Fonderie Meazza & Masciadri of Casale Corte Cerro, in the territory of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola.
The model was born between the late 1950s and early 1960s, a period in which the design of Italian domestic objects began to increasingly unite functionality, technical innovation, and formal research. Specialized sources place Termica Express mainly in the 1960s, while there are later testimonies and variants attributable also to the 1970s.
A TECHNICAL IDEA PARTICULARLY INNOVATIVE
The feature that makes this coffee maker immediately recognizable is its distinctive “moka + thermos” configuration.
Termica Express consists of two distinct elements:
- the lower part, which contains the water and the filter and operates according to the traditional steam-pressure principle;
- the upper part, conceived as a true thermal chamber/thermos, intended to collect the freshly brewed coffee and keep it hot.
This solution thus allowed not only the preparation of coffee but also to keep it warm and transport it, solving a practical need through a single domestic appliance.
The closing system also shows a technical evolution: in the early units a cork stopper is documented, while in later versions a system with expandable rubber gasket, operated by rotation, was adopted to achieve a hermetic seal.
